Nearly 50 residents displaced by at apartment complex

A fire broke out in an attic of the Covington on Cherry Creek Sunday night.

ARAPAHOE COUNTY, Colo. — Dozens of residents were displaced by a fire at an apartment complex near Cherry Creek S Dr. and E Iliff Ave. in Arapahoe County Sunday night, according to South Metro Fire Rescue.

The department responded to the fire at the Covington on Cherry Creek apartments at 2172 S. Trenton Way just after 8 p.m. Sunday.

Half of the 24 units in building 4 at the complex were damaged but no one was injured,  South Metro Fire Rescue said.

Apartment residents were evacuated to the complex's clubhouse while firefighters worked to control the flames, a tweet by South Metro said. A total of 48 people were displaced by the fire, the department said.

The Red Cross is helping those residents who are out of their homes.

About an hour after they first responded, flames could still be seen coming out the roof of the building in a video posted by the department.

According to South Metro, most of the fire was in an attic. Both the Aurora Fire Department and Denver Fire were called to help. There was no word on how the fire may have started.
