OTERO COUNTY, Colo. — A southern Colorado mother accused of attempting to murder her 8 and 10-year-old daughters at her home last month has been arrested.
Christine Martinez, 33, was taken into custody on Tuesday and is facing charges for attempted first-degree murder, first-degree assault, child abuse and arson, according to a release from the Colorado Bureau of Investigation.
Martinez is accused of stabbing her two daughters on March 31 at her home in Manzanola, the Otero County Sheriff's Office said.
She then drove her daughters northbound on Highway 207 toward Crowley County, and as the vehicle approached the Arkansas River Bridge, it left the road and landed in the Arkansas River, according to CBI.
A passerby in the area later called emergency responders, and the two girls were rescued from the vehicle. Martinez was located outside of the vehicle, CBI said.
All three were transported to the hospital for medical treatment and are expected to survive, despite serious injuries.
Martinez is set to appear in Otero County District Court on April 24. She’s currently being held at the Otero County Detention Center on a $50,000 bond.
The Colorado Bureau of Investigation, Otero County Sheriff’s Office, Town of Manzanola Marshal, and the 16th Judicial District Attorney’s Office are investigating the incident.
Mazanola is located about 50 miles southeast of Pueblo in Otero County.
