Investigators say the conductor on the Royal Gorge route train who died Saturday afternoon fell off the rear of the train as it was backing up.
The train then ran her over, according to the Fremont County Sheriff’s Office. Two hundred passengers were on board at the time.
The conductor has been identified as 28-year-old Leslie Cacy of Canon City. She was killed about four miles away from the station, and had been standing at the door opening when she fell off.
No foul play is suspected in her death, the sheriff’s office says.
An autopsy is scheduled for next week.
Due to the apparent accident, the Royal Gorge Route Railroad announced Sunday it will not be running the train for the next few days. Anyone with reservations will be refunded or may reschedule.
“We are a family-run business, and our team members are like family to us,” the railroad wrote on Facebook. “Our hearts are broken.”
