Hiker reported missing is found dead in Boulder County

The body of a 36-year-old man reported missing in the Lake Isabelle area in the Indian Peaks Wilderness was found near Shoshoni Peak on Monday.

BOULDER, Colo. — The body of a hiker who was reported missing was found in Boulder County Monday.

Boulder County Sheriff's Office said in a news release that its Communications Center received a report around 11:30 a.m. on Monday of an overdue 36-year-old man who was camping in the Lake Isabelle area in the Indian Peaks Wilderness, which is accessed from the Brainard Lake Recreation Area.

The man's family reported him missing after he did not check in with them or show up when expected.

His vehicle was found in the parking lot of Brainard Lake, and the sheriff's office began searching in the area based on reports from the family and information from the man's Garmin GPS device.

The sheriff's office deployed ground searchers, dog teams and a helicopter.

The man was found dead around 5:30 p.m. on Monday in the Shoshoni Peak area.

Due to the remote location and technical terrain, it was unsafe to recover his body at night, so crews returned on Tuesday.

Rescuers with Rocky Mountain Rescue Group, with assistance from a Colorado Department of Fire Prevention and Control helicopter, were able to recover his body and transport him to the Boulder County Coroner's Office.

The coroner's office will release the man's identity, and the cause and manner of death, after an autopsy. At this time, the sheriff's office said the death does not appear to be suspicious.

Boulder Emergency Squad, Colorado Search and Rescue Association, Front Range Rescue Dogs and Medevac assisted with the search and recovery operation.
