Micro-schools aim to give students more attention with teachers

Zealous Schools have opened the first all-girls micro-school in Eagle County.

EDWARDS, Colo. — The school year has just started and so has a new all-girls micro-school in Edwards.

Zealous Schools Edwards Campus Director Kelsey Head said the school has fewer students in it than most school classrooms.

“We are 24 students to four coaches,” said Head. “A six-to-one ratio, so we know our students very well.”

Micro schools have been popping up all over the country in the past few years. Zealous Schools opened the first micro-school in the Rocky Mountains when they opened a middle school in Eagle in 2018.

Creating smaller student bodies was an idea to give students more attention with teachers, and while it wasn’t designed with the pandemic in mind, the model has done well during the pandemic.

“We have seen a lot more open-mindedness to different school models during the pandemic,” said Head. “Before the pandemic, we were a wild idea hitting peoples inboxes.”

That low teacher-to-student ratio does come with a price. Tuition usually runs around $14,000 a year, but donations help fund 10 full-time scholarships at the all-girls middle school.

The all-girls model was created to give middle school-aged girls like Rubi Briones a chance to attend school in a place where they feel their voice is heard more than in a traditional school.

“The boys in other schools, when we try to say something, they don’t really listen to us,” said Briones. “But here, it’s an amazing opportunity to be in this amazing school.”
