Man convicted of June 2009 murder in Denver

DENVER - A jury convicted a man accused of a 2009 murder on Tuesday.

Richard Impellizine, 22, was found guilty of killing 21-year-old Billy Ortiz during attempted robbery in June 2009. Prosecutors say Ortiz was with his friends and Impellizine shot at the group and then fired at Ortiz, who was sitting in a car. Ortiz was taken to a local hospital and died the next morning.

He was convicted of two counts of first-degree murder, two counts of attempted first-degree murder, attempted aggravated robbery, two counts of attempted first-degree assault and two counts of illegal discharge of a firearm.

Impellizine faces life in prison without the possibility of parole. Formal sentencing is set for March.

A co-defendant, Nathan Martinez, is scheduled for trial later this month as an accessory to the murder.
