LOVELAND - Longtime Loveland Police Chief Luke Hecker announced Tuesday he will be stepping down at the end of the year — an announcement that follows months of sharp internal and external criticism.
"On Dec. 31 it will be my last day behind the dignified and prestigious shield of the Loveland Police Department," Hecker wrote Tuesday morning in an email to police department employees, sources told the Coloradoan.
Hecker has been the police chief for 10 years and was first hired by the department in December 1985.
Allegations of misconduct and anecdotes of officers struggling to work alongside Hecker and other command staff members pack a recent anonymous Fraternal Order of Police survey, obtained by the Coloradoan. The questionnaire offers a deep look inside an agency embroiled in lawsuits and felony allegations of officer misconduct.
