KEYSTONE, Colo. — Keystone is officially the newest town in Colorado, and it officially has a new mayor.
His name is Ken Riley.
“I’m the first mayor,” said Riley.
They spent months drafting a town charter, then a mayor and town council were elected and Feb. 8, it all was made official with the swearing in of the elected representatives of Colorado’s newest town.
"One of the thoughts has you think about it, be careful what you ask for because you’ll get it," said Riley. "This has been a big dream for a bunch of people going back almost 50 years."
Along with the mayor, Keystone now has a six-person town council that held its first session right after they were sworn in with plans to improve pedestrian safety on Highway 6 and connect more trails around Keystone.
The new Keystone town hall is being set up in the Keystone Center, a building town leaders hope to make their permanent home saying it’s surrounded by six acres of land that could be a great spot for affordable workforce housing.
Starting up a town is "a big undertaking," Riley said, and now Keystone's new government has a job to do.
"We want to ensure that Keystone is a great place to live, work, stay and play," he said.
