Boebert qualifies for primary for Colorado's 4th Congressional District

The congresswoman is running for the seat vacated by recently retired Rep. Ken Buck instead of pursuing election in her current district.

PUEBLO, Colo. — Colorado Rep. Lauren Boebert (R) qualified for the primary ballot in the state's 4th Congressional District on Friday at the Colorado GOP assembly in Pueblo.

Boebert was the only CD4 candidate to get more than 30% of the vote during the assembly process. She had already qualified for the ballot via petition signatures but chose to participate in the assembly and therefore needed 10% of the vote to remain eligible for the ballot. She cleared that hurdle easily.

Candidates who turned in petitions needed 10% of the vote to stay eligible for the ballot. Candidates who didn't turn in petitions needed 30% to qualify.

Logan County Commissioner Jerry Sonnenberg (18%) and State Rep. Richard Holtorf (15%) got above the 10% threshold to remain eligible because they submitted petition signatures.

State Rep. Ted Harvey got 25% of the vote, short of the 30% he needed the qualify for the ballot because he was not trying to qualify through petitions.

Talk radio host Deborah Flora also qualified through petitions and did not participate in the assembly process.

As the top vote-getting on Friday, Boebert will appear first for the GOP primary race on the June 25 ballot.

Boebert, the current representative for Colorado's 3rd Congressional District, abandoned her reelection bid in that district to instead run for the seat vacated by recently retired Republican Rep. Ken Buck in CD4.

There will be a special election June 25 to fill Buck's seat for the remainder of his term. Boebert isn't running in the special election and instead said she will focus her attention on the general election for the seat.

Last week, a panel of Colorado Republicans selected former Greg Lopez, a former Parker mayor, as its candidate to serve out Buck's term. Lopez will face off against Democratic opponent Trisha Calvarese in the special election.

Boebert has said that Buck's sudden resignation from Congress was timed to hurt her chances to replace him.

If Buck had hoped to give an establishment Republican an edge over Boebert in the primary, his plan backfired. The GOP committee didn't pick the establishment successor to fill his seat until January, opting for a Boebert-backed placeholder who isn't challenging her for the GOP nomination in June.
