AURORA - Aurora has a new mayor after Steve Hogan, who held the position since 2011, passed away in mid-May.

The City Council selected Bob LeGare, a current at-large council member, to be the city's new mayor at its meeting on Monday evening. He received six votes (including a vote from himself) from the 10 council members.

As a council member, LeGare chaired the Transportation, Airports and Public Works Policy Committee. He served as vice-chair for Planning and Economic Development and was a member of the Water Policy Committee.

LeGare will serve through the remainder of Hogan's four-year term, which ends in December 2019. He's eligible to run for election on the November 2019 municipal ballot, but a spokesperson for the City of Aurora told 9NEWS that during the interview process, LeGare said he would not run for another term should he be appointed.

City Council will have 45 days to follow the same appointment process to fill the vacancy for LeGare’s position.

LeGare was selected from a group of four finalists out of a pool of 13 people who applied to fill the appointment. The finalists included Dobi Hunter-Holen and Renie Peterson, both former council members, and Tim Hogan, the late mayor's son.

Steve Hogan had served the public for 34 years before his passing. He was 69 years old.
