LAFAYETTE, Colo. — Parents in Lafayette went to the city council Tuesday to discuss their concerns after two children were hit by cars on Baseline Road earlier this month.
Police say a car hit a young girl at Baseline Road and King Street on Sept. 5. Less than 24 hours later, a car hit a young boy at Baseline Road and Roser Drive.
Several neighbors spoke up at the meeting Tuesday, hoping for change.
“We have come together, and it's come together quickly because it has to,” said Kristin Zangrilli, who lives near Baseline Road. “Two families have been forever changed by this incident. It's tragic and to be honest it was preventable.”
People who live nearby have seen some change.
“They’ve just brightened up some of the paint that was already on the sides of the road, and then one of the crosswalks just today, and they replaced one of the placards just today,” Zangrilli said.
The parents say that's not enough.
“Something has to be done,” Zangrilli said. “Or maybe some restriping or taking it down to one lane sooner so then you don't need the two [lanes], just the one. There's a solution there. These are some of the ideas, you know, a more visible crosswalk.”
Parents say they don't have all they answers, but they're determined to make a difference together.
“We are still at the beginning phases of discovery,” Zangrilli said. “We are not traffic engineers. This is not our wheelhouse. But as a result, concerned parents, we have come together to see why.”
They city said police have issued dozens of tickets on that stretch of Baseline Road since just Saturday. The city added it plans to put a traffic signal at Baseline Road and Roser Drive.
