Indy 500 winner to race anyone in Denver

This year's Indy 500 winner, Ryan Hunter-Reay will be in Denver September 21 to take on all challengers.

DENVER - This year's Indy 500 winner, Ryan Hunter-Reay will be in Denver to take on all challengers.

The driver of the No. 28 DHL Sun Drop Dallara IR07-Ilmore-Honda Indy V8 has teamed up with Autonation to raise money for charity.

Hunter-Reay started "Racing for Cancer" in 2010 after his mother died of colon cancer in 2009.

He'll be in Denver to raise money for Brent's Place, the only Children's Hospital of Colorado approved "safe-clean" housing facility for immune-compromised patients and their families.

Hunter-Reay says he might even consider throwing a race.

"It's going to be a lot of fun and if anybody wants to get a shot at winning, they can put down more money. I'll happily maybe lag back for a lap or two," Hunter-Reay said jokingly.

The competition begins at 9 a.m. September 21 at Unser Racing/Karting at 7300 Broadway Street in Denver.

"It's before the Broncos game," Hunter-Reay said. "So nobody's gonna miss the game."

Hunter-Reay races the No. 28 car in honor of the 28 million people worldwide fighting cancer. Autonation's 256 stores across the country are hoping to raise as much as a million dollars in the fight against cancer in partnership with Racing for Cancer.

In a satellite interview with 9NEWS, Hunter-Reay talked about his racing career and what it takes to drive a car at more than 200 miles an hour.

"You have to respect the limits and with that wall sitting right there at 230 plus miles an hour, there are huge consequences for a mistake or for a risky maneuver", Hunter-Reay said. "If any driver tells you that they don't have fear or they're fearless, it's not true."

When asked what he drives on a daily basis, Hunter-Reay laughed and admits that he drives an Acura MDX. He has a 1 ½ year old son and says: "I drive in the right and lane and have to take him to swim lessons!"
