INDIAN HILLS, Colo. — For the past four days, many residents of the Indian Hills community in Jefferson County have been without water. The Indian Hills Water District said these troubles started with a leak -- one they still haven't found.
Sunday afternoon, contractors were digging underneath the snow to reach the water pipes impacted by the leak, racing against the sun to get the work done before nightfall.
The water district reported these issues started days ago. First came water pressure problems or no water at all in one zone of the water district, which called on people to conserve. Then a leak was reported in another zone, cutting off water pressure to that area.
Then on Saturday, the water district reported yet another zone lost water pressure. While some folks were boiling water, others were without water entirely.
The water district even encouraged families to melt snow into their toilet tanks so they could flush.
Residents in Indian Hills told 9NEWS on Sunday this situation has been deeply frustrating, stressing that they want better answers on what's happening, and want clean drinking water to be restored quickly.
By Sunday evening, the water district sent out another update, explaining they'd gotten approval from the state health department to distribute water that is higher in nitrates than the allowed maximum contaminant levels. That water will allow some customers to flush and shower again, but it needs to be boiled before drinking. And, the water district stressed it cannot be given to infants or be used to make baby formula.
The water district said there's still no sign of the leak that caused these problems in the first place.
