A bus driver has been cited after the bus he was driving crashed into the entrance of a parking garage at Denver International Airport on Sunday morning.
Johnie Watkins was driving a Flatiron Flyer bus when he attempted to enter the east parking garage around 6 a.m., police said. According to Scott Reed with RTD, Watkins missed his turn and missed a warning sign of the bridge's upcoming 9-foot clearance.
No passengers were on board, but Watkins suffered minor injuries. The 56-year-old was cited for careless driving.
A spokesperson for DIA told 9NEWS the bridge is being evaluated for its safety. RTD says the bus will stay under the bridge until after DIA finishes that evaluation.
DIA says airport operations have not been impacted.
The Flatiron Flyer travels between Denver, Westminster, Broomfield, Louisville, Superior and Boulder, but not typically to DIA.
Construction caused a weekend closure of the University of Colorado A Line. RTD told 9NEWS these buses were being used to supplement A Line service. Shuttles are still running as scheduled.
When asked, RTD said “we’ll see” about disciplinary action against Watkins.
