Grand Lake man attacked by moose dies

DENVER (AP) - The family of a 92-year-old Grand Lake man who was attacked by a moose while walking to church says he has died from his injuries.

A family statement released by Saint Anthony Hospitals says Louis Heckert died Wednesday in Denver. The former Grand Lake mayor had been in a hospice after his family authorized doctors to take him off medical treatment on March 30th, four days after the attack. The moose was shot and killed by a state Division of Wildlife officer. Officials say it might have been injured in a collision with a vehicle. Division spokesman Randy Hampton has said the animal appeared to be five or six years old and could have weighed about 800 pounds. Heckert's family says Heckert suffered from macular degeneration -- a condition that slowly blinds its victims -- and may not have seen the animal.
