Officer shoots man who had threatened woman with gun, police say

Fort Collins Police said the woman was pushing two small children in a stroller when the man threatened her.

FORT COLLINS, Colo. — Officers shot an armed man who was threatening a woman with two children near the Colorado State University campus Wednesday afternoon, according to police.

Fort Collins Police Services said at around 1:20 p.m., officers were dispatched to a call about a man who had dropped a handgun near the intersection of West Elizabeth Street and South Shields Street.

It was reported that the man, identified as 32-year-old Colten Sirio, picked the gun back up and kept walking, police said. When officers got there, they found Sirio still armed with the gun and "behaving in a threatening manner" toward a woman who was pushing two small children in a stroller near the intersection of Springfield Drive and Southridge Drive, according to police. That's just west of the CSU campus.

The Larimer County Sheriff's Office said Friday that officers recognized Sirio as a wanted suspect with a felony warrant on charges of possession of a weapon by a previous offender, theft, criminal mischief and domestic violence, police said.

The sheriff's office said Sirio refused to follow officers' commands and walked away with the woman and children. That's when one officer fired their weapon, striking Sirio. He was taken to the hospital. No one else was injured.
