DENVER BUSINESS JOURNAL - Former Wyoming Governor Mike Sullivan has been named the 2016 Citizen of the West by the National Western Stock Show.

The annual recognition goes to prominent westerners who "embodies the spirit and determination of the Western pioneer and perpetuate the West's agricultural heritage and ideals," the stock show says.

After more than two decades as an attorney practicing in Casper, Sullivan served two terms as Wyoming's chief executive, from 1987 to 1995, winning his first term in his first try at elective office.

During his tenure, the Democrat "helped the state recover from a crippling economic failure brought on by falling oil prices," the Casper Star Tribune reports.
