Polis orders flags to half-staff on Tuesday in Colorado

Corey Comperatore used his body as a shield against the bullets flying toward his wife and daughter at a rally for Donald Trump.

DENVER — Flags will be flown at half-staff in Colorado on Tuesday.

Colorado Gov. Jared Polis ordered that flags be flown at half-staff on Tuesday from sunrise to sunset in memory of Corey Comperatore.

A volunteer firefighter, Comperatore died at former President Donald Trump’s rally in Pennsylvania on Saturday at which a failed assassination attempt occurred on Trump.

Authorities have said Comperatore, 50, died protecting his family at the rally.

"My thoughts are with hero Corey Comperatore’s family and friends during this terrible time," said Polis. "There are no words that can take away the pain of this moment, but together we can help honor his life and the man that he was.

"That’s why I’m directing that flags be lowered in Colorado. The last few days have been traumatic for all Americans, and we unite to mourn the tragic loss of Corey Comperatore."

President Joe Biden and first lady Jill Biden have also extended their "deepest condolences" to Comperatore’s family.

“He was a father. He was protecting his family from the bullets that were being fired and he lost his life, God love him," said Biden, who added he was praying for the full recovery.

Corey Comperatore was killed on Saturday during the shooting at a Trump rally that was an assassination attempt on the former president's life.

Randy Reamer, president of the Buffalo Township volunteer fire company, called Comperatore “a stand-up guy” and “a true brother of the fire service.” He said Comperatore served as chief of the company for about three years but was also a life member, meaning he had served for more than 20 years.

“Just a great all-around guy, always willing to help someone out,” Reamer said. “He definitely stood up for what he believed in, never backed down to anyone. … He was a really good guy.”

Assistant Chief Ricky Heasley of Sarver, who knew Comperatore for more than a decade, remembered him as very outgoing and full of life.

“He never had a bad word,” Heasley said.
