Numerous people jumped from the second and third floors of an apartment building following a fire in Denver Sunday night.
The fire was reported shortly before 9 p.m. at the Federal View Apartments near 26th Avenue and Federal Boulevard. A spokesperson for the Denver Fire Department says crews were on scene within three minutes of the initial call. They immediately began setting up ladders and rescued additional victims from the south side of the building.
Eleven people were transported to the hospital. As of late Sunday night, six of the patients were listed in fair condition, three are in serious condition and two patients are in critical condition.
Denver Fire says most of the victims suffered smoke inhalation. It's unclear if the more serious injuries were caused from jumping out of windows.
Nikki Rabago says she just left Federal View Apartments on Easter night when she got a panicked call from a family member.
"The first thing that came to my mind was my kids," Rabago said.
Her two sons, 7 and 20 years old, were hospitalized for smoke inhalation. Her mother suffered burns to her right arm. Rabago says her son heard loud "pops," and the electricity immediately went out. Her stepfather was quick to act.
"If it wasn't for my stepdad, they wouldn't be here right now," Rabago said in tears.
Denver Police say there are no criminal investigations underway right now but added that could change when investigators get a better idea of what happened.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
