FORT COLLINS, Colo. — Fort Collins Police are investigating after a driver apparently lost control of his Mercedes and rolled the vehicle several times Wednesday evening.
According to police, about 5:01 p.m. Wednesday, Fort Collins 911 and the Larimer County Sheriff's Office Communication Center received multiple 911 calls regarding a serious crash near John Deere Drive at West Interstate 25 Frontage Road.
Fort Collins Police, Larimer County Sheriff's Office and Colorado State Patrol responded to the scene. They found a white 2020 Mercedes GLE on the east side of the frontage road. It was evident based on the damage and witness reports that the vehicle had rolled multiple times, police said.
One man was inside the vehicle. He was taken to an area hospital where he was pronounced deceased.
Police said the preliminary investigation shows the driver was traveling south on I-25, possibly driving aggressively. The Mercedes intentionally left I-25 and got onto West I-25 Frontage Road going south. The information so far indicates that the driver was speeding and lost control.
The West I-25 Frontage Road was closed in between East Mulberry Street and East Vine Drive for more than five hours while investigators processed the scene.
Police are investigating whether a medical event contributed to this crash.
“Our thoughts are with the driver’s friends and family during this difficult time," said Sgt. Mike Avrech, who oversees the Fort Collins Police CRASH Team. "The CRASH Team will do everything they can to work to find answers for them.”
