After jury hands down verdict, his community reacts to honor him

It was an emotional night in Aurora after the jury reached a verdict as people gathered around his small memorial.

AURORA, Colo. — The spot where the officers stopped Elijah McClain four years ago is now marked with a small memorial.

People who made sure the world remembered his name gathered there Thursday night to pay their respect after the jury handed down their verdict for Randy Roedema and Jason Rosenblatt.

“We are here thinking about Elijah McClain tonight, thinking about what today means,” Candice Bailey said.

Bailey organized several protests after McClain died, calling for justice.

She’s been back to the same spot plenty of times, but she said it felt different after hearing the verdict.

“I am looking at the grass that will never be green again where Elijah was murdered, I am thinking about the way we hear conviction and we automatically believe something good just happened when really it didn’t,” Bailey said. “Added on top of it is the injustice the DA’s office has carried out in the heinous murder of Elijah McClain over and over again.”

Bailey said she doesn’t think justice will ever be served. Instead, she said it’s another wound in the community that will never be healed.
