Driver who hit, killed Colorado state trooper isn’t believed to have been impaired, CSP says

Trooper William Moden was hit and killed while he was investigating a crash where multiple people were ejected on I-70 in Arapahoe County.

ARAPAHOE COUNTY, Colo. — The investigation continues into the death of the Colorado state trooper who was hit and killed while he was investigating another crash near Deer Trail Friday night.

The trooper, identified as 37-year-old William Moden, was on foot and outside of his patrol car when he was struck by a Ford F-250 at around 9:40 p.m., Colorado State Patrol Colonel Matthew Packard said during a news conference on Monday afternoon.

That driver, who was only identified as a Colorado man, has been cooperating with the investigation and is not believed to have been impaired at the time, according to Packard.

During the crash, Packard said Moden’s patrol car was parked on the right shoulder of a highway in addition to another trooper’s patrol vehicle. The truck was in the left lane.

Packard could not offer details about the circumstances that led to Moden being hit. At the conclusion of the investigation, Packard said the 18th Judicial District Attorney’s Office will decide whether to file charges against the driver.

At the time, Moden was investigating a rollover crash on eastbound I-70 in the area where multiple people were ejected. He was a part of the vehicular crimes unit and was regularly called for this type of crash.

Another trooper attempted to administer life-saving aid after Moden was hit, Packard said, and emergency medical services rushed to the scene. The trooper was pronounced dead at the hospital an hour later.

Packard described Moden as an “incredible asset to this organization” who dedicated his life to public service.

Moden leaves behind a “big family,” Packard said. A public memorial service is slated for 11 a.m. Friday in Denver. More details are expected to be released Monday night.

Moden’s patrol car is parked in front of the Adams County substation at 8200 N. US 85 in Commerce City and has become a memorial to the trooper, who spent 12 years with CSP.
