District breaks ground on first fully inclusive playground

After years of planning and proposals, DPS officially broke ground on the district's inclusive playground that accommodates at DCIS at Fairmont Wednesday afternoon.

DENVER — After years of planning and proposals, Denver Public Schools officially broke ground on the district's first fully inclusive playground Wednesday afternoon.

School leaders joined students at DCIS at Fairmont to mark this moment.

The adaptive playground started as a project pursued by some of its students, who were sad to see their differently-abled classmates unable to join in on the playground fun. Students with disabilities were left to sit and watch the other kids play without them.

So students like Araya Gonzalez, Cora Morgan and Gavin Sakotas took their plan to the school, then the district. Now, the three said they're proud to see their project becoming a reality.

"So happy," Araya said.

"Like, it's amazing to see this actually happened," Cora said.

"Yeah, I won't be seeing anybody sitting in that shady spot anymore," Gavin said.

"And I didn't think this was going to happen but it brought me so much joy," Araya said.

The playground is being paid for with money from the district's 2020 bond.

Work on the inclusive playground wraps up in time for that first recess at the start of the next school year.
