DENVER – The Denver Police Department welcomed 32 new officers by presenting them with their badges on Friday.

Each recruit was sworn in as a Denver Police Officer and given a badge, but to many in the room the ceremony was much more than that.

For new DPD officer Stephanie Cherveyak, it was a continuation of a family tradition.

"I come from a family of public servants, law enforcement and firefighters, so I'm following suit," Cherveyak said. "They actually all work for Denver, so, it's just kind of a family tradition."

Carl Cowans, a father of a new officer, expressed his pride for seeing his son make it into the DPD.

"Oh, it just gives me so much joy in my soul. My spirit knows that my son wanted to be a part of this Denver, Colorado police force," Cowans said.

The members of police class 2015-2 have completed the academy phase of their training and will begin their field training after graduation.
