COLORADO, USA — Over 60,000 personalized license plates were approved by the Division of Motor Vehicles last year – but over 1,000 personalized plate applications didn't make the cut in Colorado.
It was a busy year for the DMV staff in 2023 – the department almost doubled the amount of approved personalized plates than the year before.
However, some of the over-the-top requests included configurations like “GYATTT,” “GTJIGGY” and “OMGWTF” made the offensive-omit list and were automatically booted by the system.
The DMV has built the omit-list over the years with their partners at the American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators that make recommendations of offensive words or terms compared to what other states allow for personalized plates.
Drivers can personalize the state's 218 license plates for $60 plus fees. Personalized plate renewals cost between $25 - $75 and can be completed online.
The DMV said it occasionally reviews terms and alphanumeric combinations to be suggested for removal to a committee. A customer is allowed to appeal the personalized plate decision.
