KUSA – A woman has received a summons after the Eagle County Sheriff’s Office says her campfire ignited a wildland fire near a campground in East Vail Monday morning.

The woman, who was not identified by name, faces charges for one count of firing woods or prairie – a class two misdemeanor, according to the Eagle County Sheriff’s Office.

The blaze was first reported above the Gore Creek Trailhead at around 11:30 a.m. on Monday, the sheriff’s office said. It grew to about three-quarters of an acre before it was contained.

Investigators believe an escaped campfire is to blame for the fire – something the Eagle County Sheriff’s Office says is all too common in Colorado.
