Denver’s homeless emergency may extend to New Year's Eve

If approved, it would be the fourth time the homeless emergency declaration has been extended.

DENVER — The Denver City Council will consider extending Mayor Mike Johnston's homeless emergency declaration through the end of the year at its meeting Monday.

If approved, it would be the fourth time the homeless emergency declaration has been extended. Councilmembers expressed reluctance the last time an extension was considered in October, but ultimately approved it.

Another extension would allow the city's emergency operations center to continue homeless housing initiatives until Dec. 31, the day Johnston vowed after taking office that the city will have housed 1,000 homeless people.

Johnston’s administration has housed 224 as of Sunday, according to Denver’s homeless housing dashboard.

The emergency declaration allows various city agencies to deploy more resources, dollars and time into tackling Denver’s historic rise in homelessness.

Three councilmembers voted no during last month’s extension. Some councilmembers who voted yes asked extensive questions of Denver’s homeless response team about planning, budgets, homeless prevention and long-term housing strategies.
