DENVER — The Cold Weather Shelter Plan has been activated as frigid winter weather is forecasted to arrive Thursday evening in Denver, city and county officials said.
The Department of Housing Stability will open overnight shelters from 7 p.m., Thursday through 7 a.m., Friday to shelter unhoused people from the frigid temperatures.
Two sites will open, including the New Directions ballroom at 4595 Quebec St. and the former Doubletree Hotel, 4040 Quebec St.
9NEWS forecasted the next weather system to bring cloudy skies and cooler temperatures across the state. Afternoon highs will drop into the upper 30s and lower 40s across the Front Range and eastern plains. The high country can expect temperatures near freezing, with scattered, light snow showers.

The city encouraged people outside to move to indoor shelters because the cold weather poses a serious danger to people who are unsheltered. People in need of shelter can be referred to the city's "front door" website to find shelters that will expand capacity to help more people find indoor shelter overnight.
The city's "front door" city and county shelters include:
- For individual men – Lawrence Street Community Center, 2222 Lawrence St.
- For individual women – Samaritan House, 2301 Lawrence St.
- For youth ages 15-20 – Urban Peak, 2100 Stout St.
Families who need shelter should call the Salvation Army's Connection Center at 303-295-3366. People can ride buses from the St. Francis Center, 2323 Curtis St., between 6:30 and 9 p.m. each night to New Directions and the former Doubletree Hotel.
By Friday, mountain snow showers will pick up, accumulating between 3 and 7 inches of snow. Spotty snow showers will also move into the Front Range, with just a few snowflakes here and there. No Front Range accumulation is expected.
The city said it would consider opening daytime warming centers later in the week if weather calls for indoor shelter.
