Denver Police officers shoot, injure armed man in apartment complex parking lot

The shooting happened Monday afternoon in the 800 block of South Oneida Street, police said.

DENVER — Denver Police Chief Ron Thomas said two officers fired shots at a man Monday afternoon who originally drew their attention because he was playing loud music from a pickup truck and removing items from the truck that he was tossing into a dumpster.

The shooting happened after 1:30 p.m. in an apartment complex parking lot in the 800 block of South Oneida Street in southeast Denver, near Quebec Street and South Leetsdale Drive. The officers were in the area, returning to service from an unrelated call, when the man drew their attention, Thomas said at a news conference.

He said that as the officers approached the man, they noticed from a distance that he was carrying a gun in his waistband. They spoke with the man for several minutes to try to get him to put his hands on his head so that they could safely take the gun.

The man refused to follow the officers' orders. He made a threatening motion toward his gun and the officers shot him, Thomas said.

The officers rendered aid until an ambulance arrived and took the man to a hospital. He was in surgery and expected to survive, Thomas said.

No officers were injured, police said.

The man doesn't live at the apartments but knows others who do, Thomas said.

A 9NEWS reporter at the scene said the police investigation was focused on a truck in the apartment complex parking lot. The doors of the truck were open, and the truck was blaring music.
