DENVER — A man who died after being arrested by Denver officers had gotten out of an ambulance and run from paramedics a few minutes earlier, the Denver Police Department said.
Police held a news conference Wednesday afternoon to give updates on two separate cases -- a shooting at Commons Park on Nov. 20, and an in-custody death earlier this month.
DPD Major Crimes Division Commander Matt Clark said around 11:55 p.m. on Nov. 14, dispatch got a call from a person who was rambling and yelling. Several minutes into the call, he told the call taker he believed he was having a heart attack and hung up, police said. Firefighters and paramedics were dispatched to the area.

About two minutes later, dispatch got a call from a security officer at the King Soopers at 14th Avenue and Speer Boulevard. The security officer told police a man there was reporting that someone was trying to chase him or rob him.
Paramedics arrived and helped the man into an ambulance, Clark said. He was "noncompliant with medical personnel" and eventually got out of the ambulance and ran away, Clark said.
As firefighters left the scene, Clark said, they saw the man throw a rock at the glass entry door of the building at 1391 Speer Blvd., damaging the glass. Firefighters requested a police response.
When an officer arrived, he saw the man standing in front of the business, Clark said. The man ran away, and the officer did not chase him.
From Nov. 16: Man dies after being arrested by Denver police
Police said at 12:16 a.m., a security officer at the apartment complex at 901 14th Ave. called 911 and reported that a man had just broken a ground-floor window. Two security guards tried to keep the man from entering the building, but he pushed past them and through a set of double doors, Clark said. There, security guards wrestled him to the ground.
Clark said the man punched and bit one of the guards, and one of the guards punched him to get him to stop.
When officers arrived around 12:20 a.m., the security guards still had the man on the ground, Clark said. The officers handcuffed him and rolled him onto his side while they checked for weapons. He was unresponsive to questions, Clark said, and officers noticed he was having trouble breathing. They requested paramedics return to the scene.

When the man stopped breathing, officers began performing CPR. They also administered naloxone, but it had no apparent effect, Clark said.
The man was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced deceased the morning of Nov. 16. He was identified as James Hutchinson, 36. The coroner's office is working to determine how he died.
Three officers were involved in arresting and rendering aid to the man, Clark said.
He said "based on the nature of the officers' interaction and the custody status of the individual when he experienced cardiac arrest," DPD initiated its critical incident investigation protocol, with multiple agencies looking into the case.
