Mystery pipes sticking out of Denver sidewalk draw concern from neighbors

A tripping hazard on a busy Denver sidewalk raised concerns from neighbors in the Art District on Santa Fe.

DENVER — Denver’s Art District on Santa Fe is known for featuring plenty of things that catch the eye. But it’s not a painting or a mural that’s drawing attention between 7th Avenue and 8th Avenue on Santa Fe Drive; instead, it's some pipes sticking out of the sidewalk.

“I have no idea what it is,” said Hina Chowdhry. “It’s a death trap, is what it is.”

Chowdhry lives on the block and said she came home last week to a woman screaming in pain. The woman tripped over the pipes and appeared to have broken her wrist.

"She said I tripped over these poles, I’m sorry I didn’t see them, and she was holding her hand,” Chowdhry said.

She estimated the pipes have been there for at least six to eight months and said she's called the city multiple times. The pipes are especially problematic during First Friday Art Walks, which draw thousands of people to the area on the first Friday of each month.

"Somebody is going to get hurt again," she said.

A spokesperson for Denver's Department of Transportation and Infrastructure said they believe the metal pipes once supported decorative pedestrian lighting.

The spokesperson said the Santa Fe Business Improvement District is responsible for the lighting and that they'll be working together to address the pipes.

In the meantime, the spokesperson said they've placed a cone at the location to improve safety.
