DENVER — Fire departments in the Denver metro area responded to hundreds of calls for service Thursday into Friday, many related to fireworks.
The Denver Fire Department said crews responded to 476 calls for service between Thursday and 8 a.m. on Friday. That includes 119 calls for trash/weed or other fires, five single-family home fires, and 2 multi-family home fires.
The fire department said not all of the calls were related to fireworks, but the number of calls was much higher than a normal day.
South Metro Fire Rescue reported crews responded to 45 fires between 6 p.m. and midnight on Thursday.
Most involved grass or mulch and most were caused by fireworks, the department said.
One adult was seriously injured, and a child suffered minor injuries in separate fireworks incidents. Both were transported to the hospital.
South Metro Fire Rescue also said crews responded around 6 a.m. Friday morning to a grass fire in Cherry Hills Village in the 4400 block of East Quincy Avenue. Firefighters were able to keep the fire limited to an area about 150 feet by 150 feet.
Witnesses reported hearing a loud boom before seeing smoke, and a firework was found on the trail splitting the burn area, the department said.
Aurora Fire Rescue said crews responded to 250 fire and medical calls on Thursday, including "numerous" grass and structure fires. 108 of those calls came between 8 p.m. and midnight.
Aurora Fire said it was looking through all of the fire calls to see how many were related to fireworks, and said all fire-related calls are being referred to arson investigators.
North Metro Fire Rescue responded to 22 fires "most likely" caused by fireworks Thursday night.
That includes one in Broomfield where fireworks lit a fence and shrubs on fire that spread to a home. Firefighters were able to save the home, but part of the upstairs and attic were damaged.
West Metro Fire Rescue reported crews responded to 29 fires between 6 p.m. on Thursday and 2 p.m. on Friday. That includes four related to fireworks.
Another call was a structure fire in Ken Caryl that was likely caused by fireworks being improperly thrown out in a trash can, setting the garage on fire.
Fort Lupton Fire said crews responded to multiple fires, including five at one time, that were started by fireworks. No structure or property damage was reported.
