Trujillo is a 25-year veteran who worked his way through the ranks of the department, all the way to department chief.
Denver Fire says Trujillo has been granted an occupational disability retirement from the Fire and Police Pension Association (FPPA). They say he suffered a line-of-duty back injury seven years ago.
After surgery and numerous treatments, Trujillo's condition continues to deteriorate and acting on a doctor's advice, he applied for disability pension on June 5.
Denver Fire says the FPPA application process requires the opinion of three independent physicians – all three unanimously agreed to grant the permanent occupational disability.
Trujillo says the decision to retire has been an agonizing one for him and his family. The department says his high energy, passion, leadership and concern for his personnel and the city of Denver will be missed.
Deputy Chief James A. Sestrich will assume the role and responsibilities as interim chief of the department until a permanent appointment is made by Mayor John Hickenlooper.
