Denver Councilman Charlie Brown retiring

Charlie Brown is about to ride off into the sunset.
Some people call him the "conservative conscience" of the liberal-leaning Denver City Council. The longest serving member of the council, he's leaving in July because of term-limits. He wouldn't run again even if he could, he said.

DENVER - Charlie Brown is about to ride off into the sunset. After 14 years on the job, he's retiring from the Denver City Council in July.

Brown, 71, is known as Denver's "Cowboy Councilman." He was born and raised in Durham, North Carolina, but he's more western than a saddle sore. (His twin brother currently serves on the city council in Durham.)

Brown's office at University and Exposition looks like Roy Rogers moved into Pee-Wee's Playhouse, filled to bursting with western knickknacks and memorabilia. A photograph of Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood is taped to the office window. "Howdy" hangs on the door, spelled out with a rope.
