Denver and other Colorado cities to open cooling centers

Colorado will see a slow warming trend heading into the weekend with sunshine and potential record highs in the triple digits from Friday through Sunday.

DENVER — The City of Denver will be opening up cooling shelters as heat advisories go into effect starting Friday.

Friday, the Denver area will stay dry as triple digit heat arrives in Colorado for the weekend. Excessive Heat Advisories have been issued for the Denver, Pueblo and Grand Junction areas on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Temperatures can range between 98 and 103 degrees.

Denver Parks and Recreation will offer space in each of its rec centers that the public can access during normal business hours to cool off. In addition, 2601 W. 7th Ave. will be available on Sunday afternoon from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.

The designated spaces will be staffed and have access to drinking water, restrooms and places to sit. Denver Public Library locations are also available to use as indoor spaces to escape the heat.

Denver Parks and Recreation staff and park rangers will be working in city parks during the heat wave to help anyone in heat distress. Staff will have water and Gatorade available for people who need to rehydrate.

Aurora

The City of Aurora is making its libraries and the Aurora Day Resource Center available as cooling centers. 

  • Chambers Plaza Library10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Closed Sunday.
  • Hoffman Library: 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Closed Sunday.
  • Martin Luther King Jr. Library: 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Closed Sunday.
  • Central Library: 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Closed Sunday.
  • Aurora Day Resource Center: 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Westminster

With a heat wave coming, Westminster has reminded the community about facilities they can use to cool down. The facilities listed below are open during the primary heating hours of the day with water and restrooms available.

  • City Park Recreation Center: 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday; 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday & Sunday
  • City Park Fitness Center: 5 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday, 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday & Sunday
  • West View Recreation Center: 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday; 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday; 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday
  • Swim & Fitness Center: 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday; 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday & Sunday
  • The MAC: 6:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Friday; closed Saturday & Sunday
  • Countryside Pool: 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday, Saturday & Sunday
  • Irving Street Library: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday; 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday & Sunday

Fort Collins

Due to forecast extreme heat, Fort Collins declared a major heat risk event for Saturday. Indoor day shelter will be available at the Murphy Center from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday, Friday & Sunday and 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturday.
