Denver branch drop-off site draws crowds from nearby cities

Within hours of Denver opening a storm debris drop-off site Saturday, dumpsters were overflowing.

DENVER — The City of Denver has opened a temporary drop site for tree debris and branches from the March 14 snowstorm.

That drop site, located at 1271 West Bayaud Avenue, saw huge crowds Saturday morning, with all available dumpsters overflowing within hours.

"This is the only option in the city so far that I've heard about," said Jesse Swayne. "They should have a lot of these places running right now."

Swayne made the trip in from Lakewood to drop off a truckload full of limbs and branches, and said he was surprised to not see an option closer to home more than a week after the storm.

"It's a problem, because we're not the only ones who got hit," said Swayne.

Robert Garcia also made the drive in from Lakewood.

"I tried calling Lakewood, and I know Jefferson County has them but not until later this year," said Garcia. "I thought I have to get my branches out here and get it done with, otherwise I’m stuck with them for a few months.”

A Denver Department of Transportation and Infrastructure post said the the drop site was open to "residents who would like to compost their tree debris and branches" but no identification was checked before drop-offs Saturday. It's unclear how often the dumpsters will be emptied, or if non-Denver residents will continue to be allowed to use the site.

The site is scheduled to remain open Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. through April 6.
