Denver Autism Speaks Walk happening this weekend

People of all ages will meet at Infinity Park on Sunday to raise funds and awareness for autism research.

The Denver Autism Speaks Walk is taking place Sunday, May 5 at Infinity Park in Glendale, and you are invited!

Autism Speaks is the world’s largest autism fundraising event dedicated to improving the lives of people with autism. The organization says they are "powered by the love of parents, grandparents, siblings, friends, relatives, and supporters. The funds raised help ensure people of all abilities have access to the tools needed to lead their best lives."

Here's what you can expect at the Autism Speaks Walk:

  • A 2-3 mile walk
  • Sensory friendly activities for children
  • A 15 minute opening ceremony
  • Powered by love mission moment
  • Autism Speaks resource area
  • Refreshment area
  • Quiet zone
  • Express check-In for pre-registrants

According to the organization, "autism, or autism spectrum disorder (ASD), refers to a broad range of conditions characterized by challenges with social skills, repetitive behaviors, speech and nonverbal communication. Autism affects an estimated 1 in 59 children in the United States today, according to the Centers for Disease Control.

"We know that there is not one autism but many subtypes, most influenced by a combination of genetic and environmental factors," Autism Speaks says on its website. "Because autism is a spectrum disorder, each person with autism has a distinct set of strengths and challenges. The ways in which people with autism learn, think and problem-solve can range from highly skilled to severely challenged. Some people with ASD may require significant support in their daily lives, while others may need less support and, in some cases, live entirely independently."
