DENVER — The Denver City Council’s last action of 2023 was to approve a $30.9 million lease-purchase of the 205-room Embassy Suites hotel in southeast Denver to house the homeless.
“As long as this site is a shelter it will be a shelter for families,” Cole Chandler, the mayor’s homeless adviser, told councilmembers on Monday night before a unanimous vote in favor.
The city will lease the 7525 E. Hampden Ave. hotel from Hampden Heart, LLC for $825,000 a month starting Dec. 28. Denver expects to close on the purchase at the end of March, according to its contract with Hampden.
The hotel is equipped with a kitchen, laundry and meeting rooms. The Salvation Army is expected to operate hotel programming and oversee food services.
