Denver 911 tests out livestreaming calls

Callers to Denver's 911 can receive a text from the operator to activate livestreaming on their phones to find a caller's precise location through real-time video.

DENVER — Denver's 911 emergency call center has been testing new software to help their operators find precise locations for callers and even take in live video from the caller's situation.

When 911 receives a call, dispatchers can send a text message to the caller's phone to ask permission to pull up additional information on their location from their phones. Then they share that information with first responders.

They said being able to have video for their staff to better assess the type of situation they are responding to allows crews to have a much faster response time.

"Location is the most important piece of information that we receive, if we're going to send you help," said Andrew Dameron, director of the city's emergency communications. "And so to have a tool that reliably gives us that information without us having to ask multiple times, asking you to repeat it over and over, that speeds up the time it takes that we can get the relevant information and send help."
