BOULDER COUNTY, Colo. — Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) will not take action against the moose that officers said attacked a man working on a ranch outside of Nederland Thursday morning.

The incident happened on private property, and according to CPW, the 69-year-old victim was working near thick willow brush when the female moose attacked him. Witnesses told wildlife officers this same moose was recently with a calf, which likely prompted her defensive and aggressive behavior.

A dog was with the man while he was working.

The incident is not believed to have been sparked by irresponsible behavior, the release said. Because it happened on private property and the moose was in its natural habitat – as well as protecting her young – CPW will not take any action.

In the release, CPW said it wanted to remind the public that many animals are having babies during this time of year and they could become more aggressive, especially if dogs are left off-leash.

The public should observe wildlife from afar, and stay clear of the thick willow habitat where moose are often found resting.
