EDWARDS, Colo. — A woman and her dog are safe Tuesday afternoon after falling through the ice at a pond in Edwards, Colorado, according to the Eagle River Fire Protection District.

The Fire Protection District received a report of a woman and her dog fallen through the ice just before noon and Tuesday and rushed to the scene. Bystanders told first responders that the woman's dog first fell through the ice atop the pond and that the women fell in while trying to rescue it.

Several of the people nearby rushed in to help, fire crews said. One called 911 and two others found the "throw bag" stored in a nearby rescue station and managed to get the woman out of the ice cold water. The dog, fire crews said, got out of the water on its own.

A "throw bag" is designed for shore-based rescue, allowing people not in the water to safely pull someone who has fallen in ashore. The Fire Protection District strongly warns against ever walking on ice after someone's fallen in, in an attempt to rescue them.

If you own a dog, it's a good reminder that they don't have the awareness to understand the dangers of thin ice. The Fire Protection District said that while you're walking near the shore and nearly ice, keep your pet on a close leash. If a pet does fall through the ice, please don't try and rescue it yourself. Call 911 immediately.

A good thing to remember from the Fire Protection District: you should always assume that if a pet falls through the ice, so will you.
