FORT COLLINS, Colo. — You might be entitled to unclaimed money or property and not even know it, and there's a way to get what's owed to you.

If that sounds like an ad, spam or a scam, it's not.

It's the Colorado Treasurer's Office reminding residents that they can see if they have any unclaimed money or property through the Great Colorado Payback.

"Even businesses lose track of property and payments, occasionally resulting in unclaimed property which can be claimed," a news release from the treasurer's office says, noting that it is in possession of assets belonging to individuals, corporations, municipalities, schools, nonprofits, hospitals and small businesses.

Money and property that has been unclaimed or inactive for a period of time must eventually be handed over the state, which holds it for safekeeping and tries to return it to its owner.

How do I see if I have unclaimed property?

Go to colorado.findyourunclaimedproperty.com and look up a name, business or nonprofit organization.

If you see your name or organization, you can then file a claim to get it.
