Colorado Springs cracks down on cannabis consumption clubs

Colorado Springs is cracking down on cannabis clubs for social smoking.

Colorado Springs is cracking down on cannabis clubs for social smoking.

The Gazette reports that nine consumption clubs received cease-and-desist letters from the City Clerk's Office last week in connection to a ban on clubs enacted by the City Council on March 22.

Cannabis clubs popped up shortly after Colorado legalized recreational marijuana in 2012 as a way around the state's ban on public consumption. The clubs provided a place to use cannabis and socialize in private.

Colorado Springs outlawed sales of recreational marijuana in the city but still had clubs that operated on the basis of providing marijuana to their patrons for "trade." The product was supplied in return for membership agreements.

The city still viewed these transactions as sales but didn't ban the practice until this year.
