COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — About 100 people were treated for heat-related illnesses at an air show in Colorado Springs Saturday.
The Colorado Springs Fire Department posted on Facebook that about 100 people were treated after being sickened by the heat at the Pikes Peak Regional Air Show on Saturday.
Ten people were taken to the hospital, while others were provided care and monitored by emergency personnel at the show.
“The Colorado Springs Fire Department works and prepares very closely with the airport and event organizers when large events are held," Colorado Springs Fire Chief Randy Royal said in the post. "Today, like every day, we had a plan in place in the event we needed to activate it. All partners and resources at the airshow handled this incident swiftly and professionally. Their quick actions ensured people were taken care of and serious injuries were avoided. Tomorrow will be hot again and we ask everyone to please stay hydrated, be prepared for hot temperatures, and please stay safe."
The fire department told our partners at KRDO that many people suffered from heat exhaustion and dehydration, while some showed signs of heat stroke. There were no deaths.
Temperatures in Colorado Springs reached 93 degrees Saturday, according to 9NEWS meteorologist Cory Reppenhagen, but the heat radiating from the asphalt at the Colorado Springs Airport would have made it feel as much as 50 degrees hotter.
The fire department encouraged all attendees at Sunday's event to come prepared with water bottles, hats, sunscreen, umbrellas and anything else they need to combat the heat. A water bottle filling station will be available.
