CASTLE ROCK, Colo. — An Italian restaurant that operates inside of a historic church in Castle Rock has closed indefinitely after an exterior wall of the building collapsed.
Scileppi's at The Old Stone Church, located at 210 Third St., reported the southeast wall collapsed Wednesday. Castle Rock Fire and Rescue Department said its crews, the town's building division and a structural engineer inspected the building after the collapse.
A fire department spokesperson said the fall occurred around 11:15 a.m., and nobody was injured. The restaurant had been undergoing construction work to expand by 6,000 square feet, which the spokesperson said contributed to the collapse.
Scileppi's said they were closed until further notice.
The restaurant is located inside the St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, Castle Rock's first. According to Scileppi's website, the church was built in 1888 and was unused for almost a decade after the parish moved to a larger building in 1966 — it was first transformed into a restaurant in 1975 and was passed onto the Scileppi family in 2018.
