SUMMIT COUNTY, Colo. — A Colorado mountain home had to be evacuated Thursday night after it was flooded from waters traced back to a decommissioned mine shaft, according to the Summit County Sheriff's Office.
Nearly a foot of water rushed through the first floor of the home when deputies and members of the Red, White and Blue Fire Department arrived, the sheriff's office said.
The flooded home is off French Gulch Road near Sallie Barber Road, which is about four driving miles east of Breckenridge.
First-responders quickly determined the source of the flooding was from a decommissioned mine behind the home. The property was evacuated, and the fire department shut off all utilities.
The sheriff's office said the Emergency Management Division was coordinating resources from Summit County Road and Bridge, the building department, the Colorado Division of Water Resources, the U.S. Forest Service and the town of Breckenridge.
Ice may be a big problem along French Gulch Road for anyone recreating in that area, according to the sheriff's office.
They recommended recreationists check with Summit County and Breckenridge Open Space and Trails to check on the status of nearby trails.
A photo posted by the Summit County Sheriff's Office showed caution tape blocking off the Yellow Brick Road Trail near the flooded home.
