PALISADE, Colo. — One person is dead and six others are displaced after an apartment complex caught fire following an explosion, according to the Mesa County Sheriff's Office.
Around 7:15 a.m. Friday, the Grand Junction Regional Communication Center received a report of an explosion at an apartment complex in the 900 block of Iowa Avenue in Palisade, said the sheriff's office.
The six-unit apartment complex was "fully engulfed in flames" when fire crews arrived, and multiple agencies responded to assist at the scene.
Initially, the sheriff's office said reports suggested someone might have been trapped inside the building. The sheriff's office later confirmed one person had died as a result of the fire.
Crews extinguished the fire within an hour and a half, but the apartment complex was a "complete and total loss," according to the sheriff's office.
Six displaced residents were taken to the Palisade Community Center, where the Red Cross and other officials provided services and answered questions, the sheriff's office said.
The victim's identity and manner of death will be released by the Mesa County Coroner's Office, and the cause of the fire is being investigated. Anyone who has information about this case is asked to contact the Palisade Police Department at 970-242-6707.
