LAKEWOOD, Colo. — The Colorado Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) experienced some technical difficulties that impacted services at state driver license offices and online for the whole day.
This outage affected all in-office DMV services and driver license services online. As a result, residents were left with no choice but to reschedule their appointments.
The Driver License Office in Lakewood said they usually have 350-400 appointments per day, all of which had to be turned away starting at 8:00 a.m. Tuesday. Customers at that location said they didn't receive a notification or email about the outage.
The only service available was the written test for driver's licenses, but even those who completed the test could not finalize the licensing process. The DMV has assured that individuals who took the written test could return within the next six months to complete the process without needing to retake the test.
The state's credit card processing system was also down, limiting customers' ability to make payments using credit cards at some county motor vehicle offices.
The DMV said they were actively working with the Office of Information Technology to resolve these issues, but did not give any information about the cause, or what specifically the issues were.
By Tuesday evening, the DMV released a statement that the technical issues were resolved, and their office and online services were returned to normal. The DMV said vehicle registration fees would be waived for people affected by the outage.
Individuals with upcoming appointments are advised to monitor the DMV's social media pages for updates on the status of services before heading to their appointments. Updates will be provided through the DMV's social media channels and the website DMV.Colorado.gov.
Coloradans are encouraged to utilize alternative options such as myDMV.Colorado.gov and MV Express Kiosks for renewing vehicle registrations in participating counties.
