Officers shot and killed a man they said brandished a weapon at them after they tried to stop his vehicle at Colfax and Quebec Wednesday afternoon, Denver Police said.

At a news conference, Denver Police spokesperson Doug Schepman said that around 4:45 p.m., officers were in the area trying to find a man believed to be involved in multiple aggravated robbery cases both in and out of Colorado who was likely armed and dangerous.

The suspect was headed west in a vehicle on Colfax and stopped at the Quebec light when Denver Police officers tried to stop him, Schepman said. Instead of pulling his vehicle over, the man tried to ram his way between two cars that were stopped ahead of him.

Officers said they saw the suspect with a gun in his hand and three of them opened fire, killing him.

A woman who was in the vehicle with the suspect was also taken to a local hospital, but Schepman says investigators do not know if she was hit with gunfire.

One officer was transported to a nearby hospital for an evaluation of injuries - not gunshot-related, Schepman said.

Colfax is closed between Quebec and Quince streets and Schepman says to expect that closure to last for several more hours.

Traffic is being diverted onto Poplar - and Quebec is shut down from 16th Avenue to Colfax.

The identity of the suspect will be released by the Office of the Medical Examiner at a later date.

Whenever there is an officer-involved shooting with Denver Police, investigators from multiple jurisdictions are called in to look at the case, Schepman said.

The Rocky Mountain Safe Streets Task Force, who identified the suspect for DPD, is made up of multiple law enforcement jurisdictions - including the FBI.
