ARAPAHOE COUNTY - Clarity Commons, a special park-like space on the Arapahoe High School campus, opened Saturday on what would have been Claire Davis' 18th birthday.
Davis died in December after being shot by a fellow student at the school.
Saturday the Clarity Commons officially opened and was dedicated to the students, staff and faculty at Arapahoe High School, and the community. It celebrates Claire's love of life, the outdoors and her ability to bring people together through her happy and optimistic spirit.
"Especially after the events of December, it will be a wonderful place to come and share thoughts, come and be with other people that went through the same experiences, and just grow together as a school and community," said Senior Jordan Millhollin.
The park features berms that reduce noise, trees, and a paved walkway. There are also picnic tables, and benches where students can gather and reflect.
Governor John Hickenlooper and Claire's mother, Desiree spoke to the crowd. She talked about her daughter's last day and her decision to reach out to the gunman.
"She chose to reach out with love and concern to someone in crisis," Desiree said. " When Claire spoke to Karl, she must have known that she was putting herself in danger, but she chose to love. Her last words were not about herself something deep inside her wanted to help Karl and protect others."
A large granite pillar engraved with inspirational thoughts and quotes also stands in the middle of Clarity Commons.
